New York State, one of the 13 original colonies of the United States, is located in the northeastern part of the country. It is bordered by Lake Erie, the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec to the west and north; Vermont, Massachusetts, and Connecticut to the east; the Atlantic Ocean and New Jersey to the southeast; and Pennsylvania to the south. The state's capital is Albany. New York is known for its diverse geography, ranging from the Atlantic shores of Long Island and the urban landscape of New York City to the rivers, mountains, and lakes of upstate New York.
